Chapter 14

Family Meeting

The three of us lay there staring up at the curved roof of the carriage, each of us still panting. But we were fully sated now, basking in the afterwards of our sweaty romp. Luckily, no one in the camp needed us, or they heard the noises and thought better than to disturb us. Either way was fine with me.

“This bed is so much more comfortable than the camp rolls,” I said.

“It is,” Tasnia said. “Not having a random rock poke me in the back is nice.”

“You were not on your back much tonight,” I said with a laugh.

“My knees then…” She slapped my shoulder.

“I approve,” Tyla added from my left. “What about you, Diane? Did you enjoy the view from down there?”

I leaned over Tyla to see Diane throw the blanket over her head followed by a squeak, but other than that, she remained silent.

“If it bothers you, Diane, let us know.”

“Okay,” she said, her voice cracking and almost a whisper.

I smiled and set my head back down with a yawn. “It’s getting late. I still feel a little guilty about not standing watch.”

“It is…” Tyla said as she fought off a yawn of her own. “No longer your job, Master. Let the troops who serve you do their job.”

I laughed. “Yeah, I'm still not used to that. It all happened so fast.”

“The world, or what is left of it, needs hope,” Tyla said. “You saw the refugees. That surprise attack had them in shock. The day before and they would not have considered it.”

“True. Glad we came back to help. How are you doing, Tas?” I asked, changing the subject.

She sighed, knowing what I was really asking. “I think about him and what happened all the time, but I have not cried over it in a few days. I am not sure if that is good or bad.”

“Things like that get easier with time. They still suck, but they hurt less. I… We are all here for you if you need it.”

“Thank you, Love.” She leaned over to kiss me on the cheek.

“Yes, we are,” Tyla added.

“Thank you both.”

“Me too,” Diane said, still under her blanket.

“Thank you too, Diane. Did you want a kiss as well?” Tasnia asked with a grin.

“Eek,” Diane yelped and grabbed the pillow, placing it over her head without ever coming out from under the blanket.

“If you change your mind, I am sure Derk would let you join us in the bed. Might be more comfortable than the padded seat down there.”

“Tas, leave her alone,” I said.

“Yes, Love.” She sighed with a cute pout. Then a giant yawn hit her as she rested her head on my chest. “Okay, I think it’s time for sleep.”

“Night everyone,” I said and closed my eyes.

“Good night, Master, Tas. I love you. You as well, Diane.”

Another squeak from the covers made me smile. I placed my arms around the girls and squeezed them tight as I felt my brain start to drift.

I thought about the power living in my chest and felt it near full to bursting from all the activities we did that night.
